My Laundry Room Secret Weapon
Over the years, I’ve learned that some of the most useful household products aren’t always the newest ones on the shelf.
One product has earned a permanent spot in my laundry room: Fels-Naptha laundry bar soap. While there are countless stain removers available today, this old-school product has repeatedly impressed me with its ability to tackle stubborn stains.
If you’ve never heard of it, you may be surprised by it's stain removing power. And if you have heard of it, then you know exactly what I’m talking about!
What Is Fels-Naptha?
Fels-Naptha is a laundry bar soap that has been around for generations. It is commonly used as a pre-treatment stain remover before washing clothing, towels, linens, and other washable fabrics.
Unlike many modern spray products, it comes in a simple bar form. Users typically wet the stained area, rub the soap directly onto the stain, and then wash the item according to the fabric care instructions.
How I Discovered It
I first discovered how effective Fels-Naptha could be when my kids were younger and played baseball and softball. Someone recommended it after I complained that I did not understand why teams wear white ball pants :) !
Anyone who has spent time around youth sports knows how challenging it can be to remove dirt, clay, blood and grass stains from uniforms. After trying several spray products, I found that Fels-Naptha was the missing product. It consistently helped lift stains that other products struggled with.
My Fels-Naptha Successes
While every stain and fabric is different, this laundry bar has become one of my first choices when treating difficult spots. In my experience, it has helped remove:
- Dirt, clay and grass stains from sport uniforms and clothing
- Blood stains on washable fabrics
- Red juice stains from a white linen dinner napkin
- Other stubborn laundry stains that spray products struggled to remove
A Few Tips for Best Results
If you decide to try Fels-Naptha, here are a few things that have worked well for me:
- Treat stains as soon as possible.
- Soak stubborn or older stains overnight when needed.
- Test a small hidden area first, especially on delicate fabrics.
As with any cleaning product, always follow the care instructions for the fabric. It is better to test first and avoid assuming every fabric will respond the same way.I
Why I Keep It in My Laundry Room
In a world filled with specialty cleaners and heavily marketed products, it is refreshing to find something simple that continues to work.
- It is cost effective and usually only a few dollars per bar.
- It is simple to use.
- It works on a variety of stains.
- It has helped save items I thought might be permanently stained.
As a homeowner, parent, and REALTOR®, I’m always looking for practical products that make everyday life a little easier. This is one of those products that has earned a permanent place in my laundry room.
